Denim Jackets❣️

Plus, how to seek style advice without loosing yourself 🗞️

Hi Shortie,

When you're on the fence about an outfit or whether to keep a garment, who do you turn to for advice? For me, it's my photographer husband, Aaron. I like to call him my editor.

This dynamic began when we worked together—we'd collaborate on the creative direction of photo shoots, with me handling styling and him managing all aspects of photography. When styling the looks for the model to try on outfits, he'd give me his opinion. That practice has now evolved into him being my sounding board for my OOTDs and potential fashion acquisitions.

Behind the scenes, working on our first big shoot

It's not uncommon for personal style book authors to suggest finding someone to be your "editor," often implying that you should take their advice as gospel. I disagree.

Someone very wise once told me that when we're seeking advice, we're really just looking for space to talk through what we already know we need to do. For this reason, we should avoid telling people what to do and never act purely based on advice.

Instead, I recommend approaching your "editor" by first sharing your thoughts on the piece in question. Explain what you like and dislike about it. Center the discussion on your comfort and preferences.

Be open to what they say. Take a minute to digest their feedback, but always return to the mirror and ask yourself how you truly feel about their input. Both of your opinions can be valid at the same time, but ultimately, it’s about you and your personal style.

I've completely disregarded my editor's opinion when I feel strongly about something, especially when I sense he doesn't quite grasp my vision. And that's perfectly okay. Your fashion editor should be a collaborator in your style journey, not a dictator of it.

Sincerely short,

Lwany

P.S. Should we create a private Shortie community where we can bounce style ideas off each other?❣️

Girls do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves and, of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys they’d just walk around naked at all times

SHORT QUESTION

Q: I recently bought a denim jacket from Levi’s, and it fit surprisingly well, even though it wasn’t petite-sized.

Unfortunately, I left it behind in a hotel room during a trip (major facepalm). I’ve tried to get it back, but I’m about to give up hope.

Do you have any recommendations for denim jackets in a similar style and price range, preferably from a brand that offers petite sizing? I’d love to support more stores that cater to us!

– Laura

A: First of all, I love that you want to support brands that carry petite sizing!

Too often, I hear Shorties complain about struggling to find better-fitting clothing, yet they often don't actually own any petite-sized garments.

This is precisely why I created the petite store directory—I want to make it easier for short women to shop for petite sizing. I know it's not easy; a lot of what's out there is designed for either a much younger or much more mature crowd.

It feels like we lose a handful of petite exclusive retailers every year. The reality is that brands won’t expand into the petite sizing market unless it's financially beneficial. That's just capitalism. As long as we don't shop for petite-size clothing, our struggle to find better-fitting clothing will continue.

I'll get off my soapbox now!

We're so similar—last week you shared a struggle that I've had, and I actually have the same Levi's jacket, just in a lighter wash.

Same jacket, different wash

I'd say the jacket is petite-friendly if you tend to wear an extra small or small. It's safe to assume that larger sizes have proportionally longer sleeves and torsos.

Here are some petite gems worth considering:

XS PETITE – XXL PETITE
Cotton, Polyester, Spandex
$39.99 $31.99

XS PETITE –  L PETITE
5% Recycled Cotton, 95% Cotton
$79.95

PETITE XXS – PETITE XL
94% Cotton, 5% Recycled Cotton, 1% Elastane Spandex
$140.00 $56.00

These are for Shorties looking for a different spin on the classic style:

Petite 30 – Petite 42
100% Cotton
€91,67 €75,00

PETITE XXS – PETITE XL
100% COTTON
$198

PETITE XXS – PETITE XL
76% Cotton, 23% Lyocell, 1% Spandex
$139.00 $65.99
